Atlantic Beach on the Crystal Coast
Atlantic Beach sits at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, a 26-mile barrier island along North Carolina's Crystal Coast. It is the oldest and most established beach town on the island, incorporated in 1937 when a bridge first connected the mainland to the shore. Today it remains the commercial and social center of Bogue Banks, home to The Circle - a beachfront area with shops, restaurants, and public beach access that has drawn visitors for decades.
The town stretches from the Atlantic Ocean on the south to Bogue Sound on the north, with a mix of vacation rentals, year-round residences, and locally owned businesses in between. Fort Macon State Park anchors the eastern tip of the island, offering one of the most visited historic sites in North Carolina alongside some of the best swimming and fishing access on the coast.
What to Do in Atlantic Beach
Atlantic Beach is where most visitors to the Crystal Coast start their trip. The Circle area is walkable, with restaurants, ice cream shops, and direct beach access. The Oceanana Fishing Pier is one of the last classic fishing piers on the southern Outer Banks, open to anglers and sightseers alike. Bogue Inlet and Beaufort Inlet are nearby for boat access, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
Fort Macon State Park draws over a million visitors a year. The restored Civil War-era fort is free to enter, and the surrounding beach is one of the cleanest and least crowded on Bogue Banks. The park also has nature trails through the maritime forest and seasonal ranger-led programs.
Dining in Atlantic Beach ranges from casual fish camps and taco stands near The Circle to waterfront restaurants on the sound side. The town is also the closest beach community to Morehead City and Beaufort, giving visitors easy access to the wider Crystal Coast.
Getting to Atlantic Beach
Atlantic Beach is accessible via the Atlantic Beach Causeway (NC-58) from Morehead City. The drive from Raleigh takes about two and a half hours. The closest commercial airport is in New Bern (about 45 minutes), though many visitors fly into Raleigh-Durham and drive down. Once on the island, Atlantic Beach is the first town you reach heading east on Fort Macon Road.
